Answer: (a)

Total annual rainfall = 2.7 × 12 = 32.4 inches

Rainfall for first seven months = (2.7 – 1.1) × 7 = 11.2

Answer: (d)

= $3944/8$ = 493

Question :3

Out of three given numbers, the first number is twice the second and thrice the third. If the average of the three numbers is 154, what is the difference between the first and the third number?

Answer: (e)

Let the first number be = 6x

∴ Second number = 3x

and the third number = 2x

According to the question,

6x + 3x + 2x = 154 × 3

or, 11x = 154 × 3

∴ $x = {154 × 3}/11 = 42$

∴ Required difference = 6x – 2x = 4x = 4 × 42 = 168

Question :4

A batsman scores 80 runs in his sixth innings and thus increases his average by 5. What is his average after six innings?

Answer: (a)

Let the average of 5 innings = x

Scores in sixth inning = 80

∴ Total of 5 innings = 5x

According to the question,

${5x + 80}/6 = x + 5$

⇒ 5x + 80 = 6x + 30

⇒ x = 80 – 30 = 50

∴ His average after six innings = 50 + 5 = 55

Question :5

In a family, a couple has a son and daughter. The age of the father is three times that of his daughter and the age of the son is half of his mother. The wife is nine years younger to her husband and the brother is seven years older than his sister. What is the age of the mother?

Answer: (d)

Let the mother's age be y years.

∴ The age of father = (y + 9) years

The age of son = $y/2$ years

The age of daughter = $(y/2 - 7)$ years

Now according to the given condition,

(y + 9) = 3$(y/2 - 7)$

⇒ y + 9 = ${3y - 42}/2$

⇒ 2y + 18 = 3y – 42

⇒ y = 60 years
